Highland Optimist Oratorical Speech Contest

An after school enrichment program. IMSA meets on Wednesdays after school from 2:45 to 4:00 pm.  IMSA Fusion, sponsored by the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, is an after-school enrichment program for students who are talented, interested, and motivated in mathematics and science.  Students engage in a unit of study each semester through hands-on, inquiry-based activities.  Each unit of study concludes with a culminating project using the knowledge gained throughout the semester.  Mrs. Coziar and Mrs. Bernal are the sponsors for IMSA.

NEW INTRAMURAL CHESS:

You are invited to join the Highland Chess Club.  Signups for Chess Club will begin soon.

Mrs. Dena Geiger is the Math Team Coach.


The purpose of this program is to prepare students for the various math competitions held throughout the year. In the process of preparing for these competitions, data is analyzed, hypotheses are formulated, and unique methods for finding solutions are discovered. The program lasts from November to March. All middle school students who wish to extend their problem-solving skills are invited to participate.  Math Team meets on Thursdays from 2:45 to 4:00 pm.

Model UN meets on Mondays from 2:45 to 4:00 pm, from October to February.  Based upon the United Nations, this program is designed to allow students to explore the inner workings of international problem-solving, cooperation, and debate.The program is open to all students with a teacher recommendation. Students will refine their researching skills on various countries and complete a written resolution on current topics important to our world.  Both serious and humorous topics are used as a basis for lively debates. Our year will culminate at the Tri-MUN conference in Collinsville;  a two day event where students may receive awards for resolutions and debates.


9-15-17 Do you love to debate, learn about current events, and study other countries?  Then Model UN is for you!!!  Mrs. Abbott and Mrs. Athmer are planning to hold the first MUN meeting Monday, October 2nd from 2:45-4:00.  If you are interested in exploring our club, attend the first meeting to learn more about this exciting group! 


This year students who join Model UN are required to have a Teacher Recommendation letter. You will find the blank letter attached here.

Scholar Bowl
Mrs. Stephanie Schwappach is the coach for Scholar Bowl.  Scholar Bowl practices are held on Tuesdays from 2:45 to 4:30 pm.

Science Olympiad
Science Olympiad is a rigorous academic interscholastic competition that consists of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. Participation is open to interested students in the seventh and eighth grades. Students study and compete in the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers, and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills, and science applications. The regional Science Olympiad is held at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in February each year.  We do not have a Science Olympiad Sponsor at this time.

Student Council
Mrs. Mecala Scholl and Mrs. Dawn Hubbard are Co-Sponsors.   The Student Council is to be a connection between the administration and students.
