Support Staff

We would like to invite all students, parents, and staff to stop by and see us. Mr. Farel is located in room 102 and Mrs. Martin in 206, all near the main office. We can be reached by phone at 651-8800, or at our email addresses.

Some services we may provide include talking with students, consulting with teachers and parents, counseling in individual and group settings, leading skills acquisition and divorce support groups, and assisting with academic, personal, health, and career development.  In addition, if you are concerned about academics, we can assist you by considering options such as after school tutoring, consultation with the team of teachers, or possible referrals for further academic testing.  Mrs. Martin also has information and resources on various health issues.

Family Therapy Specialization,Washington University in St. Louis (1990); Master of Education in School Counseling, University of Missouri-St.Louis (2008).

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (Illinois).

School Social Worker Certification (ISBE) and School Counselor Certification (ISBE).

Certified Non Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) instructor for the school district.


Mr. Farel has worked in the Highland School District the past 15 years providing services to special education and regular education students Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Job title: School Social Worker


Education: Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology, Master of Science in Clinical Child and School Psychology, and Specialist Degree in School Psychology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.


Experience: Ms. Felchner is in her second year at Highland Middle School and third year working in education.


Personal: Ms. Felchner enjoys spending time with her family and friends, running, baking, and spending time outdoors.

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing from SIUE in 1990 and Certified School Nurse Certificate from SIUE in 2011

Experience: Mrs. Martin is in her second year at Highland Middle School and 5thyear working for the Highland School District. Mrs. Martin was a substitute nurse before accepting a full time position at HMS.


Personal: Mrs. Martin is married to husband Steve and they have one daughter, Martina who is in college. Mrs. Martin enjoys reading, cooking and spending time at Lake of the Ozarks.

2014 Graduate of Greenville College, BS in Business Management.

Substitute teacher in the Highland and Bethalto school districts before being hired as the DSR director in November of 2015.
Plans to return to school and obtain teaching certificate.
-golf, fantasy football/baseball, traveling, coaching in the summer.
- Interned with Ripken Baseball during the summer of 2012 in Aberdeen, MD.
- Played prospect baseball with the FCA affiliated Southern California Catch during the summer of 2013 in Los Angeles, CA. 
- Legally ordained to perform marriage ceremonies in Illinois.
